The taxi ride was pretty uneventful, apart from me spitting my chewing gum out the window on to the side of the taxi. It was bright green but the driver didn’t see it as he dropped me off. The first flight from Bangkok to Mumbai was at 9.30AM and I managed to get a bit of sleep after they had taken off and served the meal. Read the rest of this entry »
I decided to go on a grand tour of Bangkok for my last day there. We had Thai breakfast as we walked down to the river to catch a fast boat to the Pantip Plaza where the Computer City is located. This is a five floor shopping mall with all electrical shops. I did some quick price comparisons, and the stuff on sale was about the same price as in the UK, so I didn’t buy anything there. As we had already booked a hotel for the last two nights in Bangkok, it was time to move on. After getting up fairly late, we walked down to the ‘Green Parrot’ for a breakfast. Then went back to pack our bags and check out of the ‘Honey House’. It was a great hotel and would go back anytime. Read the rest of this entry »
Today we went to visit and experience some of the attractions of Bangkok. It started with a walk from the hotel down to the river via Sukhumvit Soi 21. We stopped along the way for Thai breakfast from a small shop and then boarded the fast river boat to take into the heart of the city. The river stinks and looks very dirty, so when these boats get up to full speed you have to keep your mouth closed to stop any spray from the bow wave getting in and making you ill. The boats are fast and fun and take you through the slums of people living by the river, and you have to quickly jump on and off as they don’t stop for long at each station. The stations are not very well marked either, so you have to be careful about getting the right stop. Read the rest of this entry »
Started the day with a good 1st breakfast at the Green Parrot Bar, then walked along the skytrain route. We walked quite a way ( Soi 8 ) before I found a tailors shop and was measured up for a tuxedo dress shirt for only £18
Bangkok city reminds me of these films – Metropolis, Total Recall and Blade Runner. It feels like there should be cars driving around the sky. The Central World Plaza is a huge seven floor shopping mall that has a sealife centre in the basement and an IMAX cinema on the top floor. They also sell Ferrari’s and Lamborghini’s on one of the top floors. Read the rest of this entry »
Today we are flying to Bangkok, so we had to pack our bags and clear our room before 12 noon. Our main luggage was left in the guesthouse while we went out to find something to eat for late breakfast. Once again we found ourselves walking round ‘Little India’ enjoying all the smells and sounds. We found a very basic vegetarian restaurant and as soon as we were seated, the waiter started to serve our curry onto fresh cut banana leaves instead of plates. They didn’t even ask us what we wanted! This is probably the best Indian food I have ever had, and plenty of it, sorry Naz. The French term ‘Plat du jour’ seems to sum it up quite well. Didn’t wake till nearly midday – had a headache – bloody beer. Went out for a walk round Little India and stopped for lunch in one of the many Indian restaurants. The food was excellent but it was very hard to find anything on the menu that I recognised.
After lunch, we went to see how much it would cost to fly from the island to Bangkok direct. They said it would cost 372 Ringgit (about £70) and there were seats on the next day flight. We booked it as it would save us a 21 hour overnight train journey. Read the rest of this entry »
At 06.15 sharp the taxi arrived. There was no where near as much traffic as we thought, so arrived quite early for the train. We had egg paratha with curry sauce for breakfast from the cafeteria in the station and then tried to board the train. We made a small mistake in not getting our Malaysian entry card before going through the gate to the trains, as it took a few minutes to find someone with one. This card needed to be filled in, as you had to clear passport control before getting on train. It was less that 5 minutes after boarding the train it left 5 minutes late at 07.45. The train journey lasted for 16 hours, and the only break was everyone had to get off and clear passport control just after we left Singapore. Read the rest of this entry »
We landed about 7ish in the morning, taking into account the 2hrs time difference. Singapore airport is very impressive and very clean, quite a difference to Mumbai airport. After clearing passport control and getting some Singapore dollars from an ATM, we boarded a underground train called the MRT and headed off to the hotel I had booked in the Wetherspoons at Heathrow. A girl behind the info desk in the airport told us to get off the train at EW9 stop. Read the rest of this entry »
